My Escape to Vietnam

Well, it's my first trip to Vietnam. The trip has definitely widened my horizon about the lifestyles and the culture of the Vietnamese people. My desperate feet have finally step on a foreign land. The airport looks remarkably amazing in its modernist architecture. My cousins and I had a little confusion about the currency there; we had a stack of Dongs, Dollars and Ringgits in our wallets. One thing that petrifies me about Vietnam is its traffic. I noticed hundreds and hundreds of motorcycles budging on the road with no specific direction. Taxi drivers kept tooting their hone for non-stop. According to the tour guide, it’s their culture. A thought came to my mind. My legs will definitely freak out even before I accelerate.

Besides that, the food in Vietnam was a nightmare to me. I still remembered how I gulped down that horrible mint and the raw ‘tauges’. I can still imagine that green chlorophyll going down my throat. Really felt like a cow chewing on the grass. Reminds me how privileged I am to live in Malaysia, indulging in different kinds of food that has a mixture of spiciness, sweetness, and saltiness. To name a few dishes that is making me insane is my favourite pan-mee, roti canai, and nasi beriani with rendang.

The Cu Chi Tunnel was the place that I was looking forward. The tunnel was a shelter for the locals during the tragic Vietnam War that has killed countless people. It was quite creepy as the tunnel was so small, dark and it definitely stinks, not forgetting it’s terrible air radiation flow. We had to actually squat to make our way through the tunnel.

Another unforgettable experience was when Malaysia lost to Vietnam in the SEA Games football match. These patriotic Vietnamese citizens actually roamed the streets with their bikes to celebrate sweet victory over Malaysia. I actually thought it was Vietnam Independence Day. What a great experience to see them waving their flags with such high admiration, respect and love to their country. Unlike we Malaysians, we don't really care about our local football team until King Gopal and his team led us to triumph when they won the finals in SEA Games. Ask around the teens whom they worshipped. Answers were none than other, the glorious MU.

Last but not least, we managed to shop till we dropped. The scarfs were so cheap. I’m satisfied.
